Ana Ivanovic ended her five-match losing streak against Lucie Safarova 6-3 6-2 to reach the semifinals of the Toray Pan Pacific Open on Friday.
Safarova last tasted defeat against Ivanovic at the 2008 French Open, but her run looked in danger from the outset in Tokyo. A brilliant backhand return and a well-timed foray into the net helped the Serb to an early break before she repeated the trick a few games later to take total control of the opening set.
After firing down a couple of aces to wrap up the set, Ivanovic quickly made her mark in the second, breaking twice more as she calmly closed out a 6-3, 6-2 win.
"From the first moment, I tried not to think too much about the score and just the next point, the next game, and that's what I did really well. I was really pleased with that and
felt that I played a really good match today," Ivanovic said.
Ana will play Anquelique Kerber, who defeated Cibulkova 6-3 6-0 for a spot in the final. They will play tomorrow on Center Court 2nd match around 1:30 local time.
